Why is my embryo not as developed as it should be?

I'm 8 weeks pregant from LMP, but my doctor, who has been doing ultrasounds every week because I am spotting daily---sometimes bright red blood, sometimes brownish---says that the ultrasounds reflect a 5 week LMP embryo. I know my dates are not incorrect. I know when my last period was, I know when I ovulated and I know when I did a positive pregancy test. What reason other than a miscalculation or a miracle could explain the 3 week retarded development of my embryo/fetus? Is a much smaller embryo a classic sign of a particular chromosomal defect with the baby?
