'Discomfort' during speculum examFrom: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 27 Sep 2000 00:39:29 -0500 (CDT)
One of the most uncomfortable things for me about a well-woman exam is the pressure of the speculum on my bladder and my rectum. I spend the whole time terrified that I'm going to urinate or pass gas during the exam, and concentrating on holding both in. And of course, tightening my pelvic muscles is not particularly helpful for the exam. I really try to not eat all day to minimize any gas and make sure my bladder is empty right before the exam. But as soon as that thing goes in, I feel like I ate a can of beans and drank a thirstbuster. Do either of these things ever actually happen? Please tell me I would not be the first one to experience such an "indiscretion" during an exam. I'm sure this will not get better as I get older. I'm sure this is probably a major lame-o question, but it's been bugging me for a while. Thanks, Andrea
