post-coital spotting, abnormal PAP --please help!!From: A (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 11 Sep 2000 02:03:13 -0500 (CDT)
I am a 24-year-old medical student (second year). Over the last three months, I have been spotting after intercourse. This happens every time I have intercourse and is not as heavy as a period, but is definitely noticable. I also had an abnormal PAP in July (ASCUS - mild displasia). Knowing that post-coital spotting is a sign of cervical cancer, i have now been back to the gynecologist 3 times (at student health), and am extremely frustrated. I asked if I should have a colposcopy given the fact that i am bleeding after intercourse (along with my abnormal pap) and she said that i didn't need one and that she didn't think the bleeding was connected to the slight cellular changes detected (i'm having the pap repeated in Nov). she also examined me and said that my cervix looked perfectly normal. however, i still don't have a satisfactory answer as to why i am bleeding! i think about this constantly!! Here are some other possibly important facts about me: i have had normal pap smears every year up to this one, i have been taking orthocept since november (but i can't link this to the spotting, since i was on loestrin for 4 years and never spotted before and didn't start spotting until this june), i only spot after intercourse (every time, though), i have tried lubricant and have been careful to take my pills at regular intervals. here's another thing: recently (past few months), i have noticed some external soreness in the labial area and noticed some small bumps that look almost like scratches (more so than warts, but i can't tell) i don't think the bleeding is coming from them, though. i also had a normal clamidia test. also, inital penetration (not deep) is painful - i do almost feel like something is ripping, - but after inital penetration, it doesn't hurt. sorry for the novel - i just didn't want to leave anything out. i have another appointment with a different gynecologist this month. i feel like the doctors aren't addressing my fears or giving me any good explanations. i feel like student health is getting annoyed with me - but it's my body and i don't want any cancer to go undiagnosed! i also want to know why i'm bleeding!!!any explanations/advice would be greatly appreciated..i am consumed by this... -A
