Some of it has to do with a "vaso-vagal" response. The anxiety of the process fueled by the sensations/pain associated causes a variety of things including feeling faint or actually fainting, becoming clammy, developing nausea/vomiting, etc. Two things: First, the HSG is usually not associated with quite as much discomfort as the endometrial biopsy. Second, there are a variety of "coping" techniques that can be utilized. One that works quite well is working on placing yourself someplace else mentally, like maybe on the beach on the French side of St. Maarten. With practice, I have seen this technique work quite well. Third, if it becomes a major problem, precluding some of these tests and procedures, there are medications available to help take the edge off and you can discuss this option with your physician...
