Discoloration of Toe Nails

I hope I describe this accurately enough to get a response. A femaile has discoloration on a few of her toe nails. It appears to begin on the inside of the toe nail and as they grow, the discoloration works it's way completely through the toe nail. The toe nail is still intact, it simply looks like a crusty old toe. Is this related to vitamin deficiency, fungus, reaction to 'polishes'? Does anyone know what might be the cause of toe nail discoloration? Any input is appreciated. Thank you.
