ovarian cyst?From: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 30 Aug 2000 08:29:19 -0500
The story up to now: Saturday night (august 27th?), I started having pain and pressure around the pelvic floor, shortly after intercourse. I thought I was just constipated, but the pain just got worse over the next few hours. Around 12:30 am Sunday morning, I went to the ER and by that time I was hardly able to walk upright. I was nauseated by the time I got to the ER, and was feeling faint within an hour of my arrival. After several hours of basically being ignored, I was presented with discharge papers. The "diagnosis" was pelvic inflammatory disease and cervicitis. I refused to sign the papers, telling them (for the fourth time) that I could not even sit up without feeling faint (and had almost passed out in the bathroom, which was dismissed as the "vaso-vagal" reflex (sp?). Another 30 minutes later, blood was drawn. The red count did not indicate any internal bleeding, so they sent me home with prescriptions for antibiotics and a Dx of PID. I made an appointment with my regular ob/gyn for this morning. He did a pelvic exam and a vaginal ultrasound and found that my left ovary is enlarged and I have fluid in my abdomen. He wants to do a laparoscopy on Friday. I am still very sore and my abdomen is definitely swollen and tender. Ok, what I want to know is, did the ER treat me improperly? I feel they did, but I am not familiar with how cases like that are handled... You would think that someone presenting with sudden abdominal pain, tenderness and swelling would at LEAST have bloodwork done at the outset... (it took them 4 hours, and it was done only as an afterthought...)
