Post-op bladder tie-up surgery

After bladder tie-up, is it usual to have the cathedar taken out after 6 days and then have it reinserted the same day? Is it usual to not be able to void on the 6th day after surgery after one's cathedar has been out for 5 hours? Is it true that the bladder has to adapt to its new position in order to urinate? Doctor recommended patient learn to insert and take out the cathedar in order to see if she can void on her own. Sounds reasonable--is it?

Please respond--my neighbor is very anxious waiting to see the doctor in 3 more days.
