Hi!

I recently went to a lecture given by a cardiologist and he said that very woman who can, should take estrogen after menopause, but for all the other reasons other than cardiovascular. He felt that there were better approaches to the cardiac benefits of estrogen. I was surprised to hear him say this. I have been following my blood lipids for 2 years. My HDL has gotten as low as 26 at some points and it seems when I manage to raise it a bit, I also raise everything else with it. At the end of May I started taking .625mg estratab daily for menopausal symptoms and six weeks later had my total cholesteral and HDL levels checked. My total cholesterol went from 231 (in Feb '00 with an HDL of 43) to 271 with an HDL of 58. Several doctors have told me that yes, estrogen can raise the HDL that quickly. So it would appear that estrogen was beneficial in my case, as far as the HDL goes because no amount of diet and exercise over a 2 year period got it up that high. It will be interesting to see what happens when I go on one of the statin drugs, as the ratio is still too high.
