I have not used Elavil for this purpose, nor have I ever heard of it being used for short term sypmtom relief, though that does not mean it can be used in this fashion. It is an antidepressant with sedative effects, and I use it occasionally for depressed patients who are not sleeping well, such as with post partum depression. Elavil is not addictive, but it is best to taper off of it if it has been used for a long time, as sudden cessation can cause irritability and sleeplessness.
