perimenopause/acute anxiety

Is there a recognized link between perimenopause and severe anxiety attacks? I'm 35, have no history of PAD, and have had completely normal cycles until this month, when I began bleeding a week early and experiencing hot flashes accompanied by nausea, chills, and absolutely debilitating panic attacks. My primary care physician, with over-the-phone help from a local OBGYN, prescribed birth control pills to help balance my hormone levels, and Xanax to stop the anxiety attacks (thankfully, the meds got the above symptoms under control with the first dose). Women in my family usually enter menopause in their late 40s, though I've had a stressful physical history (mitral valve repair surgery, CFIDS, hypothyroid) and a great deal of recent emotional stress which may have helped trigger an "early" perimenopause. I have a full followup appointment with the OBGYN in a month, but I'm trying to gather info in advance. I've read plenty about hot flashes, but haven't encountered much about acute anxiety. Any info would be sincerely appreciated.
