Spironolactone

I am in my early thirties and I have lost about 85 pounds in the last year, which I believe has had a negative affect on my hormone balance because I have started experiencing extra hair growth on my face and breasts. I asked my GYN to order a complete hormonal work-up, but he only ordered a Testosterone level because he felt that was all that applied. The test result showed that my Testosterone was slightly elevated so he prescribed Spironolactone (50mg) which I take once a day.

I read up on the side effects of this drug and I am wondering if this is an appropriate treatment. Is it commonly prescribed for my problem? When should I start seeing results regarding the unwanted hair? I would appreciate as much info as possible. Thanks.
