Tahoe is an awesome place, Andrea. If you come in Sept or Oct, there are great hikes. The lake is calm and you can go boating (it's a bit cold for kayaking after late Sept though). Ther are a couple of boats (the MS Dixie and Tahoe Queen) that go out on the lake all year. There are some factory stores on the South Shore, and more boutique-y stores on the ritzy North Shore. You can take the tram at Heavenly for lunch, a hike and to see a bird's eye view of the lake. The casinos also have entertainment, not just gambling. There are some marvelous restaraunts (Evans, Cafe Fiore, The Summit in Harrahs and Sunday brunch at Llewelyns in Harveys are my favorites)
