Question about first week of birth control pills

I always read that if you don't use protection the first seven days when starting the pill you may get pregnant. I was just wondering how that is possible? Doesn't the pill stop you from ovulating and if so how can the first week be risky and not the second or the first month? And what is the possibility rate of pregnancy occuring if you have unprotected sex five days after starting the pill if your husband ejaculates inside you? I was on the pill Levlite until over a month ago and went without any pills for over a month. I started Lo/Orval I think is the name of it Sunday when I started my period. Any answers you can give me are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
