Re: more residency questionsFrom: Abbey (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 2 Aug 2000 23:36:17 -0500 (CDT)
Family practice, internal medicine, and pediatrics residencies are the shortest at 3 years. OB/GYN and dermatology are 4, surgical residencies a minimum of 5. (Of course, if you subspecialize, you'll spend an additional 1-4 years or more, depending on the specialty.) I'm not aware of any field that requires less than 3 years of residency, with the exception of a handful of programs that allow you to combine your 4th year of med school with the first year of a primary care (FP or IM) residency. Technically, you are licensed to practice medicine after only one year of residency (the "intern year")- but these days it's nearly impossible to get a job without finishing a complete residency and passing the board exams. (Maybe at one of those doc-in-a-box walk-in centers...) For more info on residencies, you might check out the AMA's online graduate medical education database- it has tons of info on every program imaginable, along with hours, length of training, salary info, etc. etc: http://www.ama-assn.org/cgi-bin/freida/freida.cgi
