Incomplete examFrom: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 1 Aug 2000 17:17:54 -0500 (CDT)
This isn't GYN, but I would appreciate some advice on what is appropriate for me to expect from the doc. I just took my son for his yearly checkup last week (6 years old). After I left the office, I realized she never checked his ears. I normally wouldn't care, except that he had an ear infection 4 weeks before the checkup and the only reason we didn't schedule a followup on the ears is because he already had the well-child scheduled. I would think that an ear check would be a routine part of the well-child visit (they've always done it before), and certainly appropriate for a child that just had an ear infection that required 2 rounds of ABX. I'm sure we just got sidetracked with discussion while she was doing the physical exam, and the ears just got overlooked. I guess my question applies to any routine exam anyone might have. What should you do if you realize after the fact that part of the exam was omitted? And should you have to pay for a 2nd exam if you have to go back to have the exam completed? For example, what would you do if a patient calls and says she didn't get a breast exam during her well-woman visit and the exam wasn't documented in your records? Thanks, Andrea
