Pregnancy problems?

I am currently somewhere around 6.5 and 7 weeks pregnant. I had very light spotting (light pink) on three separate occasions last week and went to the hospital on two of those occasions. My HCG level was approx. 1600 on July 17th, approx. 8500 on July 26th and 15,686 on July 29th. However, when I went for an ultrasound on July 28th (estimated 6 weeks, 2 days pregnant), they could not detect a heartbeat. They want to do another one in 2 weeks, but I'm an absolute basketcase and two weeks seems like an eternity.

Given my HCG levels should I still be concerned, or was this just too early to detect a heartbeat? Would HCG continue to rise if there was no fetal development?
