HRT and blood pressureFrom: Joan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 31 Jul 2000 07:12:08 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, I was on HRT for 2 years with no side effects. I went to my doctor one day and she took my blood pressure. It was 150 over 80 which is pretty high for me. Nortmally my blood pressure is around 110 over 65. I was alarmed. She said this was a side effect of the HRT and that my blood pressure was to be monitored. I instantly took myself off the HRT and bought a blood pressure machine. When taking my own blood pressure at home it was usualy the same around 110 over 70, and in to morning around 100 over 60. I tested the machine on other people just to make sure it was working properly. I went to the nurse about 3 weeks after coming off HRT and my blood pressure was 170 over 80. Again on taking my blood pressure at home I found it was low. I returned to my doctor and she again took my blood pressure and it was 150 over 90. She said I would probably have to go on medication to reduce it. I do not want to go on medication to reduce my blood pressure and I don't believe it is high. By the way, I used to be a nurse and I do know how to take a blood pressure reading. I am 48. I take my blood pressure readings on a regular basis and the highest it has been is about 130 over 80 after exercise. I am very confused, off HRT and feeling miserable. Is it normal for HRT to cause high blood pressure after taking it for two years? Can I be so terrified of my doctor that my blood pressure rises so high when I visit her? I would be very grateful for some help. Joan
