Response to questions from Dr. Harvey

Maggie: Because herpes is a viral infection, does that mean that the baby I am carrying will automatically have the herpes virus in its system too? > Dr:>>>>>Nope.

(New) Does that mean that the baby WILL NOT have the herpes virus, or just that the baby doesn't automatically get it? How will I know? Do they do a test at the hospital - or only if there is a risk (i.e. sores are present during birth)?

Maggie: If I have a cold sore, will that affect the milk?

Dr:>>>>>Not even in the ballpark.

So the virus in my system will not be passed to the baby through breast feeding - is that correct? I am very careful about not touching sores directly and washing my hands after medicating it. Is there anything else I would need to know NOT to do when the baby is born (I'm due in late February)?

> >>I have read that if there are sores on the genitals, the baby will have to be born ceasearan. Is that always the case? > >>>>>Depends upon whther or not the genital lesions you've never had surface or not.

So, the only risk is if I have never had sores/lesions before the baby is born and have them during delivery?

Thank you so much Dr. Harvey for answering my questions!
