Re: Constant yeast infectionsFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 29 Jul 2000 13:31:58 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Tired Mom: I can sympathize with all of your concerns as I have recently been diagnosed with a hypersensitivity to a certain type of yeast. It sounds like you are at the end of your rope having tried everything under the sun. I hope I can offer a few more suggestions which might bring your young one some relief: 1. When was the last time a culture(the type that takes a month to fully show results, not the wet prep type that can be done immediately) was done on your daughter? Is it possible that since the previous culture she is plagued by a new type of yeast which would require a different medication like Terazol? Are you sure you had a full blown culture and not just a wet prep? If you haven't insist on getting a culture to specify which yeast(s) are present. They take about a month to get results back. In my situation once the specific yeast was identified I was put on a one month course of Terazol and now I'm on an every other day regimen for two months. After that I'll be on a once every 3 day regimen until I can get to a maintenance dose. It has taken about 6 weeks and finally I've gotten some relief! 2. I too suffer from allergies to fragrances and other things. I found that applying the ointments to my vaginal area actually worsened my symptoms. After consulting a vulvular/vaginal specialist at the local medical school it was suggested I try to apply small amounts of fragrance free diaper rash ointments to help my irritation. I found that the zinc oxide formulations actually gave me some relief. Try the Toys R Us or the DRC fragrance free brands. 3. Another suggestion I received was to use a hair dryer on a cool setting to dry my vaginal area after showers or swimming. I was told never to rub that area with a towel to dry it because it would irritate me more. Also I'm sure you are aware of the cotton only underpants suggestion. 4. As far as underwear I was told that clothes dryers don't always kill yeast on laundered underwear. It seems hard to believe doesn't it? I was told to either microwave my underwear or use a hot iron on the crotch area to kill any remaining yeast. I use the hot iron on them. 5. It is good that you use fragrance free laundry detergent. Another suggestion is to do a double rinse to get all the detergent out just in case your daughter may be sensitive to something in the detergent. 6. As far as diet is concerned, I became an avid label reader and found to my dismay that many processed foods contain added yeast. Also I eliminated most bread products since they contain yeast and don't drink beer as well (I'm sure your daughter doesn't drink beer though!). You might also want to check any vitamin supplements your daughter takes as I found many, especially those with B vitamins and selenium, contain added yeast. There are many varieties specifically formulated to be yeast free. I used to buy my vitamins in bulk at Sams but stopped once I realized most of the Member's Mark varieties all contain added yeast. Good luck to you and your daughter. I hope she can find some relief soon.
