Pain in newborns

I was reading an article on MSNBC (link below) that was discussing an article in Science journal. The basic story was that there are rat studies that suggest that pain and tissue injury in the early days of life can cause changes in the nervous system that may make them more sensitive to pain later in life.

If similar results occur in humans, what would this mean to routine infant circumcision without anesthesia (still very common), the routine "heel sticks" that every baby endures? With a sick baby, you have to make a choice, and sometimes the painful procedures are necessary to save their life. But it seems like this could cast new light on the routine procedures that are done on healthy infants today.

Any thoughts?

Andrea
