I'm 30 and planning to start med school in fall 2001- hopefully in an American school, otherwise Europe if all else fails. I just finished a graduate degree and applied to med school last year for the entering class of 2000, but was rejected. Here's my dilemma: I do want to have children someday. If I start med school at 31, I'll be at least 38 by the time I finish residency. I realize fertility decreases with age, as does the risk of complications. I didn't expect to have this year off, so I'm considering trying to get pregnant now- which means I'd have an infant in my first year of med school. My husband is a real gem and would support me either way- and I think that it's probably better to have an infact in the first two years, before I'm on the wards, than in third year or later. I'm guessing that I could spend a lot of the first two years at home studying- at least more than in the clinical years. I'd be interested in any insight or experiences anyone has about pregnancy in med school vs. small children in med school vs. residency. Can you do med school with children? How can you possibly handle a pregnancy during residency? Is it better to just wait until I'm finished? How big a risk would I take if I waited until I were 38 or 39? On another note, what risks might med school pose to a fetus? I've heard of the problems with CMV and X-rays in the first trimester. What about the formaldehyde they use to preserve cadavers in Gross Lab? Thanks in advance for any advice or insight.
