Miche This is certainly not totally normal. You need to do several things. First, take her to the ped, but he will probably send you to an ob. Second, make sure she is on a vitamin with some iron, and it would not hurt her to take some iron supplement on a regular basis (1 or 2 times a week). Third, I would have her take 2 aleve 3 times a day when her menses starts (a day before if possible). Continue this for 3-5 days into the menses. It will help the uterus contract more normally, and hopefully lead to less bleeding. She may need to be placed on some hormonal therapy for a while, but the referral ob will be better able to determine this. Good Luck
