Nicotine -- was OTC BCP's?From: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 1 Jul 2000 13:29:54 -0500 (CDT)
I'm confused. The sole purpose of cigarettes is to provide nicotine to the user -- they have no redeeming value other than that. In addition, they deliver a wide variety of dangerous chemicals and toxins to the user (aka side effects). Yet they are readily available to anyone who wants them. However, the nicotine patch, which has the same function with none of the nasty stuff, has to be regulated by the FDA???? And it required a RX until a couple years ago. How addictive or dangerous is something like codeine compared to nicotine? So let me see if I get this straight: You can sell just about any chemical for consumption as long as you don't claim any therapeutic benefit and the FDA doesn't care. You can put oregano in a gelcap, call it "Menopause Helper", and put the "not intended to treat disease..." disclaimer on it, and the FDA can't touch it? I guess I just don't understand the way the FDA works.
