It is best not to do a pap smear while you are bleeding, but a pelvic exam is fine -- and is necessary most of the time to determine hte cause of hte bleeding! A pelvic exam + speculum exam can identify a polyp on your cevix, and ovarian cyst and an enlarged uterus, all of which can lead to abnormal bleeding patterns

What can >cause anovulation bleeding or a polyp?

lots of things keep you form ovulating -- stress, thyroid disease, obesity, too thin, excessive exercise, perimenopause.... as for polyps, they are generlly benign growths of the uterine lining or cervical canal tissue that can contribute to irregular or heavy bleeding

Is it so serious that I should go >to an urgent care facility if I can't get in to see her?

opnly if you are bleeding heavily (usually defined as greater tahn a pad an hour)
