Ovulation, in general, occurs 14 days before the next period begins. Sperm can survive up to 5 days and hte egg lasts 1, giving a fertile window of about 6 days each month (the 5 days before ovulation and hte day of ovulation). you certainly could get pregnant during hte week after your period ends -- for example, if your period lasts 5 days and you have sex 4 days after that (cycle day 8) and you ovulate 5 days after that, there could still be live sperm around to fertilize the egg. It is less likely you will get pregnant if you have sex within 7 days before you period starts.

If you do not want to get pregnant, use a reliable form of birth control!
