Re: OTC BCP's?From: Kristy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 29 Jun 2000 20:35:58 -0700 (PDT)
Hi Andrea, I heard about that on the news the other day, and they were talking about medicines for diabetes, cholesterol, and High Blood Pressure in that particular piece. I think that it's an interesting concept b/c then people wouldn't have to pay the full price that some do for prescriptions if they don't have an ins that has formulary benefits to help with that cost, but I also think that it's dangerous. I feel that medicines such as the ones that I've listed and the oral contraceptives should be given under a dr's supervision just in case the patient runs in to problems that could cause some very serious side effects such as clots in the legs, and the possibility of strokes. I will be following this news with great interest but I'm glad to know that it's going to be a little bit of time before the FDA conducts the hearings to decide if these meds should go OTC. Did they say exactly when the FDA would possibly start having these hearings? Kristy :)
