The primary difference is the method of "cutting". The cold knife uses a scalpel and the laser uses a laser to cut. The laser tends to coagulate any bleeding while it is cutting, with the knife, you may and usually do require sutures-that dissolve. Both heal about the same. One advantage of the cold knife cone is the specimen that is given to the pathologist. Most pathologists will tell us that the cold knife specimen is more easily analyzed. The laser tends to "burn" the margins of the surgical specimen which makes it harder to comment on the degree of abnormality present. This can be a very important aspect because it tells us whether the cone cured things or if further therapy is required... Lynn
