Infertility workup?From: Abbey (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 25 Jun 2000 01:13:46 -0500 (CDT)
This may sound preposterous, but is it possible to undergo an infertility workup- at least for the man- if we're not currently trying to conceive? What does such a work-up involve? My husband and I tried unsuccessfully for about 2 years. Now I'm at a time in my life where pregnancy is not feasible and won't be for several more years. I'm currently taking OCP's, more to regulate my cycle than for contraception. The problem is that I still think I may want to have kids someday- I'll be in my late 30's by then. However, I also realize that fertility decreases with age. I guess I just want to know now if there is a problem- so I can deal with it and plan accordingly. (Or if all else fails, consider delaying my plans and attempting pregnancy now!) I realize that I can't be tested while on the OCP's- how long would I need to go off them before being worked up? What's involved in this work-up? Can we go ahead and at least get him tested now? (I suspect a male factor, since he was married previously, used no contraception, and no pregnancy resulted even after a year. Now she's remarried and pregnant, so it definitely wasn't her.) Thanks for any info!
