Re: Group B Spectra of vagina found positive during an internal examination in week 36From: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 21 Jun 2000 15:20:40 -0500 (CDT)
I am not a doctor, but am pregnant and a UTI with Group B Strep so have done research, this is what I've found out. The harm to the baby comes during delivery. If passed to the baby GBS
can cause serious respitory problems and make the baby very, very sick.
The risks of passing it on to the baby are very small, but the disease
is such a nasty one they want to make sure that he's covered.
>6.What way is it harmful to the baby if passed to the baby. Your doctor's treatment of oral antibiotics, from what I understand is not the standard one. Typically women who test positive for GBS are given I.V. anitbiotics during labor and delivery. Ideally, they will receive them for at least four hours before deliver, but the antibiotics have been shown to be effective after only 30 minutes. If you go into labor sooner, I'd imagine you'll get I.V. antibiotics.

I'm sure a doctor will answer your post, too and give you more insights.
Good Luck with your new baby. I hope all is well.
