This is generally true, and it is as safe as taking the pill in the usual way. I say that it is generally true, because there is a chance of breakthrough bleeding in this circumstance, and that chance is a bit greater since this is your first cycle or two on the pill, a time when breakthrough bleeding is a bit more likely anyway.
