Roberta, The answer depends on the size of the cyst and your age (whether or not you are cycling or menopausal). If you are having monthly periods, then the approach toward a cyst depends upon its symptoms, size and persistence. Every month an ovulating female forms a 2 cm cyst on one of her ovaries, which ruptures with ovulation. It is fairly unusual for ovarian cysts to cause discomfort unless they are quite large, related to endometriosis or twisting on its "stalk" or pedicle. Regarding the liklihood of cancer, that also depends on your age to some degree. Under the age of 40, it is less likely. Over the age of 40, it becomes a little more common. If you are postmenopausal, there is increasing concern for any cysts on the ovary and these need to be addressed rather closely... Lynn
