It is chronic myelodysplastic syndrome. This is a preleukemic acquired blood disorder that often progresses to acute leukemia. It is characterized by low blood cell counts and low production of red blood cells. The bone marrow usually appears normal. Approximately 1-10/100,000 cases are diagnosed annually. It more commonly occurs in elderly patients. More common in males. The causes are not clearly understood but may be related to genetics, as well as exposure to radiation and to mutagenic chemicals...
