It is hard to speculate on what might cause this unusual surgical complication without knowing more about the indications for the hysterectomy, whether or not any other procedures were done at the same time (ie vagina or bladder tacking), type of incision, postoperative complications (ie infection, fever) and history of any prior surgeries. If the hysterectomy was for cancer then fistulas are more common, particularly if the patient has ever received pelvic or abdominal radiation. Some fistulae close on their own, while others require surgical closure. It depends on the size, location, symtptoms, and patient's medical and surgical hysterectomy. Best wishes,
