Re: Nurse Practitioner vs OB/GYN.From: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 18 May 2000 16:38:44 -0500 (CDT)
I believe that most nurse practitioners work under the supervision of a physician. My OB/Gyn employs one and she fills the roles similar to what Dr. McIntosh described in his response. I was very happy with seeing her for some of my routine checkups the last 4-6 weeks. I would think it could be incredibly helpful for a doctor in solo practice. There is nothing as frustrating as waiting > 1 hour for your 3 minute belly check because the doc had an emergency. But you may want to confirm that the doctor is actually supervising the nurse practitioner. I've heard stories of doctors running their practice in name only with NP's (or PA's, or whatever) providing all the care and the doc actually lives in another state and visits the office once a week or so to see more "complicated" patients. I personally would be very wary of a doctor (of any sort) that doesn't have any hospital admitting privileges. It may be the choice of the doctor, but it may also be that no hospital will give the doctor privileges. Even in Family Practice, it seems that there would be occasions that the doctor would need to admit a patient to the hospital (i.e. pneumonia, etc). I would certainly ask the question before deciding to see the doctor, and maybe even check with the state board. Just my opinion!! Andrea
