Re: First Pap Update(June)From: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 17 May 2000 00:17:35 -0500 (CDT)
June, I completely understand your concerns about the Pap smear and the whole exam. I am 19 years old and recently had my first exam. I too was absolutely petrified and humiliated just from thinking about the possibility of being examined down there. Also, I am not sexually active and am very healthy so it took a lot of convincing on the part of my friends to get me to be examined. In the end though, I am so glad that I went. I honestly never felt truly exposed because as others have posted, you will never be truly nude. Of course anyone looking at the genital area is awkward and exposing but it wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined it to be, partially because I was so covered up if that makes any sense. No, it was not really a pleasant experience, I don't think anyone would say that it is actually a fun time! But the best part about it was that I felt like I took charge of my own well-being. When I got the results of the test back, I felt proud of myself for forcing myself to be examined even though I was not at all comfortable with the idea. Rationally, I knew it was the smart decision to make and I didn't let myself think about it enough to lose my nerve. And the bonus was that I found out that everything was normal, and I am in control of my body. It really was an empowering experience for me. I hope you can have a similarly positive, although admittedly slightly uncomfortable experience as i did. Good luck with your decision and if you have any other specific questions you would like answered please post again! Amy
