Bridget When a woman has her menses, a class of chemicals known as prostaglandins build up during the release of the uterine lining. The more of these chemicals you have, the more you cramp and the more you bleed and may clot. This can be normal, but I suggest you take a drug such as advil or aleve. Take it before you start your period and continue it for 2-3 days into the bleeding. This should make your bleeding more regular and your cramping much less. Good Luck
