Re: EXCESSIVELY LONG AND HEAVY PERIODSFrom: Debbie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 30 Apr 2000 14:46:27 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, that is exactly what I had. I am 33. All my life had regular light to normal flow periods, and the last two years the flow turned into a flood! I had all sorts of tests done: pap test, pelvic exam, endometrial biopsy, abdominal and transvaginal probe ultrasound, saline infused sonogram, hysteroscopy, D&C. No cause was found. I thought maybe I had a polyp or a fibroid but nothing was found. The only thing left could be adenomyosis. It is a disease of the uterine muscle...the endometrial tissue that normally lines the uterus gets in the muscle and causes symptoms like this. It is also called endometriosis interna, it is not endo but it virtually does the same thing except it grows inside the muscle of the uterus. It can be caused by having large babies..I delievered two, one was 8.4 and one was 10.2 oz. But that evidence isn't very clear cut. Sometimes it will show up on an MRI, or through having a lap done if the uterus is enlarged or boggy looking they suspect it even more. usually the only way one knows is having a hysterectomy and finding out from the path report. In this case the diagnoses is the cure. Could be a hormonal imbalance too. That is what the doc's think I had, and I had an endometrial ablation done a few months ago and am waiting to see if this solves this problem or not. If not, I am having a hysterectomy done asap since I cannot stand planning my life around my periods any longer. Mine were so heavy I literally could not walk a few days a cycle or I would gush and flood blood out so fast and so much that I had to sit still. No life for anyone. I would go to the doctor while bleeding and get an ultrasound done to get an idea of what could be wrong. If you are bleeding everyday and cannot even get a pap/pelvic exam in, you can ask for an ultrasound at least..I know how hard this is as I lived it too. It is just awful! Best wishes, Deb
