questions about symptoms and first gyn exam!!!

Hi, I'm a 19 year old college sophomore and I have a few questions. I apologize in advance if this email gets lengthy. First of all, I am not sexually active at all and therefore have easily avoided going for my first gyn exam. I'm scared to death to go because I know that I will be very tense no matter what I do and I have heard that it can be very uncomfortable. I'm always nervous when I go to any doctor anyways, and I can't even imagine having this kind of exam. However, I know that I should go since I'm over 18, and I've also had a couple symptoms for over a year that I should probably get checked out but I don't know.

The first is a pain at the very top of my genital area, actually kind of where the labia meet at the top if that makes any sense. It isn't constant but pretty often I feel it. It's almost as if there is a cut there and anytime I try to spread the labia apart I feel sharp pains there. It also hurts sometimes just if the crotch of my jeans hits me in a certain way there. It's very very painful at times but sometimes not at all.

Second, I also get very itchy under the labia at the top of my genital area sometimes. It's kind of limited to the area around the clitoris. I don't understand it because it's so limited in area, and I don't have any strange discharge. I really wonder what both of these problems stem from but I'm also very worried about what the gyn will do to check them out, particularly if there is nothing visible. Does anyone have any idea what she may do? I'm worried because I don't do pain well, particularly when I know I'm going to be scared to death about this exam, if I even can find the courage to make an appointment. Any help you can give me would really be appreciated. I'd like info on these problems but also from other young women about how uncomfortable their first gyn exam was. Thanks!
