Is it okay to ask Ob/Gyn for a reference?

Hi I was wondering if it would be appropriate or would I be out of line to ask my Ob/Gyn doc for a reference for an externship? I am starting school in July for diagnostic U/S and will graduate the program a year later. Then I will be beginning my 3 month externship. The externship will be completed in a hospital in my area. Now one of the hospitals in the program is the hospital my doc works in and it is close to my home as well as my children's daycare. So since I have a great relationship with my doc would it be okay to ask him to put a good word in for me and maybe request that my externship be completed in the hospital he works in? I know he would definitely do this for me, but would I be out of line to even ask him for this? We're not close friends or have families that go way back or anything. So would I be in the wrong to ask him for this? Please any input is appreciated!!! Thank you.
