Re: Abuse victum, afraid to go to a gyno. i have severe panic attacksFrom: Stacey (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 27 Mar 2000 00:36:27 -0600 (CST)
First of all, thank you for being able to write to all of us about this. You've no doubt had a tough experience with this. Having the courage to talk about your experience is half the battle. Thank you. You deserve a hug. I'm not a doctor, or a psychologist, but I am a fellow 19-year-old female who has had a similar experience. Although, let me stress that I am not you and your experience is yours and yours alone. First and foremost, you need to seek help. I know that you have tried that already, but it takes time. You cannot expect this to just take care of itself overnight. Nothing that any of us write to you here will be able to help you go to the gyno unafraid tomarrow. I can only offer this to you as advice: 1) Get help in understanding that what happened to you was not sexual, but a crime of violence and domination. 2) Get information on what a pelvic exam is. Understand that your doctor is not trying to be "sexual" in any way. Understand that you have the right to expect that your doctor explain to you exactly what is going on. Understand that you have the right to ask your doctor to stop at any time. Understand that you have the right to refuse treatment. 3) Before setting up an appointment, first try to feel comfortable with the idea. You may want to speak with your doctor and tell her/him about your past experiences and fears. Good luck to you. Please, don't feel that you have to go to the gyno tomarrow. I could only venture to guess what is causing the problems with your periods, because I went through the same thing, but everyone is different. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Please tell me how you are doing in the future. Thanks for your time.
