BBT Temps & Surging

When is the best time for a person to conceive? - is it WHEN you surge, BEFORE you surge or the day AFTER you surge? I am asking because my doctor suggested that we continue to have intercourse the day or two after I surge (which would be when my temp rises) and I was told that once your temp goes up, you have ovulated - and therefore could not get pregnant. I am a little confused now and would like someone to clarify this for me.

Thank you for responding.
