Mammograms are inexpensive (relatively speaking - compared to cars, houses, dying) and I can't tell you how many women whose lives have been saved in my practice because of "early" mammos. Now let me tell you that the literature doesn't necessarily support mammos prior to age 40 but I'm a believer. I recommend one at 35 , one at 40 and because 5 years is a long time, one in the middle, around 37.5. For women with a family history (mother or sister) I move up the timetable by 5 years, starting at 30. We also add breast sonography liberally to aid in complete readings and diagnosis.
