yet another cervical cancer questionFrom: ani (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 17 Feb 2000 09:52:37 -0600 (CST)
again, thanks for your responses. knowing that i will not be jeopardizing my health in any way sets me at ease and gives me confidence that my appeal, which i sent yesterday, should probably work. but i do have another question (sorry, i'm a curious person, i need to know why things work the way they do...) i've read that women are supposed to have pap tests done from the age of 20 onward, whether they are sexually active or not. what's the point of doing the test if there's no real chance of them having the disease? i'm just interested because i've heard horror stories about pap tests from various friends and it seems like it's something they do, frequently for no reason. for example there was a story here about a woman going to the hospital for strep throat and them giving her a pap test - why? and a friend who went into the hospital for migraines, at the age of sixteen and still a virgin, was also forced to have the test, much to her psychological detriment. what possible connection is there between a headache and a pap test? -ani p.s. - i also contacted the aclu and they said that it's a violation of my civil rights to require the test.
