Re: A favor from our readersFrom: Mary (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 13 Feb 2000 09:55:58 -0600
> Any insight into this from our readers? Thank you very much in advance! Dr. Hill, I don't have much to add to what has already been said. I have had both good and "not so hot" encounters with residents and teaching physicians. My most recent experience (1997) was at the U of MN for an appt with my RE. The resident gave me the MOST thorough exam I have ever had in my life. I felt like she was actually looking for something - not uncomfortable, just very thorough. I could count on one hand the number of times I have felt like I had a thorough physical exam in the past 25 years. When the RE came in they both talked with me and reviewed the entire physical. I felt like I was involved in the appointment, not just a specimen being discussed in hushed tones by docs with their backs turned to me. My first encounter (1987) was when my OB brought in a resident when I was trying to push out my 11+lb son. He was not introduced and all my OB said was (to the resident) "This lady is trying to push a semi out of a one-car garage!". I believe the resident was called in to do the c/s as he was the one in the OR photos doing the majority of the work. I have no problem with residents doing an exam as long as I (or any other person) is still treated with dignity and respect. We may be "just a case" to them but we are people too.
