Sleep aids while breastfeeding

I am breastfeeding my 7-month-old about 4 times a day. I have been having a horrible time sleeping for several weeks and was considering trying melatonin or valerian to improve the quality of my sleep. I have used melatonin in the past and it seemed to be quite helpful -- I don't remember why I quit using it.

Is there any information or opinions on the safety of melatonin or valerian while breastfeeding? How long do they take to flush through your system -- if I take some at bedtime will it be in my breastmilk by morning?

Thanks, Andrea
