Period scheduled to hit on wedding day!

I am 30 years old and am scheduled to get my period on my wedding day.I get severe cramps and sometimes nausea during my menstrual cycle. I have heard that you can take birth control pills for a longer period of time to prohibit the normal cycle. I currently am not on the "pill" as I typically have side effects from using it. However I am willing to live with the side effects for a month so I will not run the risk of getting sick on my wedding day. Is this possible or will it harm me to do this just for a month?
