My mother is 59 years old as has been on HRT (both pro and estrogen) since 1993. She had her first baseline mammogram in 1991. The most recent one (2 weeks ago) showed some marked increase in density in two places (the report called the focal points or something like that), one in each breast. The report also went on to say that since 1993/94 mamogram, the breasts have appeared more dense (but never mention the focal areas until this mammogram) over time. There is no history of breast cancer in our family, but obviously, my mom is concerned. They want her to return in 6 months for another mammogram. So her questions are: is the increased density of the breast normal when one takes HRT, or is this abnormal for any woman regardless of hormone therapy? Does the reference to a focal area mean the the breast tissue is just denser in these areas vs. other areas? Is waiting the 6 months for a repeat mammogram the acceptable course of action in this case or should she follow up sooner? Should she consider going off HRT, even though our family has a history of heart disease, or do the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks in her case? Thanks for your response.
