There are a number of reasons why an ultrasound at 5 weeks might not show anything. If you are mistaken about your last period, or ovulation was later than expected, the ultrasound might not show anything. Also, if the ultrasound was performed abdominally (versus vaginally, which is better), then it might miss a sac. The person doing the sonogram has to be skilled. Finally, either a miscarriage or an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy would show rising HCG levels, but there would not be a visible fetus (although there sometimes is a sac). 5 weeks is sometimes a little early to see things, but by 6 weeks you really should see at least a sac, if not a fetus. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
