Help - confused about treatmentFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netSat, 29 Jan 2000 00:32:55 EST
Dr. M: This week my gyn started my on lupron - the 3 month injection - because of my pain in right ovary (there is a growth there - 9mm at time of surgery on 11/17 for 12CM serous cystadenoma with LMP (low malignant potential) and removal of left ovary - pathologist could not differentiate where ovary ended and tumor began - so therefore could not accurately say if LMP was in ovary or tumor, frozen sections were ok, final pathology came back as stated above so no further testing was done, however, right cyst/growth was on consent form to be removed but was not, on 11/29 u/s it was 18mm, and on 12/6 CT is was almost 4CM) pain has continued all this time. He did a pelvic exam this week, stated growth was still there, and that some of the pain might could be from endometriosis, therefore the lupron. However, no endometriosis was there at surgery on 11/17, which was done laproscopically. He also gave as a reason for just not going back in the whole scar tissue routine, although, again, stated after surgery there were no adhesions and minute scar tissue present (had uterus removed in 1987). So now I'm totally confused and frustrated. The effects of the lupron are horrible. It just seems like it would have been so much easier to have just went back in laproscopially and removed the cyst/growth on the right ovary that was left in there in November, doesn't it? I'd far rather deal with possible scar tissue than 3 months of this, where there is absolutely no guarantee that it will work on the growth and no endometriosis has been sighted for it to work on either. Will the lupron make the growth go away? It's been there for 5 months now and has been hurting badly for as long. I can't have sex with my husband - that's been 5 months- going on 6, I can't tolerate being on my feet for long periods of time (I'm a nurse) so therefore it has affected my being able to work, and therefore income. There wasn't even an ultrasound done after the pelvic this week, which I found to be extremely odd, considering the just recent diagnosis from surgery and the ongoing problems with this side. Please help me to try and understand this route chosen, for I am slowly beginning to lose faith in the very system that I have so diligently worked for for over 12 years now. Every aspect of my life is continuing to suffer as a result of this ovarian stuff that has been going on since September. Should I get a second opinion? I mean, to me, it just seems simpler to just go in there and get the thing out - what if it's got the borderline cancer cells in it too or something. We have a very strong history in the first cousins - paternal side - of ovarian cancer. 3 out of 8 have died within the past 5 years - all in their 30's. I'm 34. I'm trying not to be paranoid, but I also want to be as thorough as possible, and certainly am tired of the pain the growth on the ovary has been causing and continues to cause. Also, any useful info on lupron would be helpful. I wasn't even aware that it sent you into menopause until the nurse told me - after the injection. I've had a horrible horrible headache that won't go away. I do suffer from migraines, and take Esgic Plus, but it just won't respond to them. Is this from the lupron - it not only hurts in the temple, but also is frontal, which is unusual for me. With kind regards, Vicki
