ERT and prolonged bleedingFrom: KB (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 19 Jan 2000 13:49:00 -0600 (CST)
I hope you can point me in the right direction. Lately, I feel like I'm going around in circles and ending up back right where I begun. Here's some history. I'm 43. I have 2 girls, ages 14 and 12, and one boy, age 8. All were normal and healthy deliveries. When I delivered my son, I immediately had my tubes tied. No complications at all. However, since the birth of my son, (1991) my cycle has never been the same (I was always very regular, 5 days, etc). Since 1991, I've gone from 16 days apart to 40 days to none at all. In 1998, I underwent a D&C, which returned normal, also pap smears are normal. My hormoned level was then check, along with thyroid. I was told I had undergone menopause. I was placed on ERT, (patches). I lasted 2 months on them, as the side-effects were unbearable. The DR. then placed me on a drug called Evista, which was said not to be ERT, more for my bones, etc. Then I moved and went to a new doctor for my annual checkup. Everything(pap, etc.) came back normal, however, she indicated that I was perimenopause and not postmenapause. Therefore, she took me off the Evista, as she said I should have never been on it. In August, 1999, a month or so later, I had a period that lasted over 40 days. In the meantime, the DR. said the prolong bleeding was due to the build from the medication I was on. She did an ultrasound that show thickening of the uterine wall, but indicated the thickening was also from the medication. I also had a biopsy taken of the uterus, which returned normal. After all this, we waited, and I was then put on provera? to stop the bleeding, which it did. Another probe-ultrasound was performed, which indicated the wall of the uterus was thinning and back to normal. Then another blood test was performed which did determine that I was postmenopause. I was put back on the Evista, as I really hadn't any trouble before hand. But..this time, I begun experience severe bloating after several weeks, where I looked and felt 4 months pregnant. I called the gyn., however, they referred me to my family practice. I felt they were fed up with, as they told me they didn't treat abnormalities of the abdomin. I have seen the family dr. who has examined me and referred me to a gastro. This was in November, and I'm still awaiting my Feb. appointment. I stopped taking the Evista on my own, and the bloating has stopped and reoccured only once (just last week). Today, after being off the Evista for a month, I begun my period, (just like this past August). I immediately called the gyn. and told her the problem reoccuring. She has told me to call if the cycle runs over 10 days, or if I use a pad within an hour. In the meantime, she is calling it "withdrawal bleeding." First, I didn't understand the Evista to be estrogen related, and have spoken to two pharmacist who agree. I am totally at lost and don't know if I should wait. Should I perhaps go through another 30 to 40 days of bleeding and chalk it up to this type of medicine, or should I demand they get to the root of this problem or really have they? I guess I'm wondering if you have ever heard of such, especially the Evista and the problems that can occur when coming off of it. Do women who take normal ERT and decide to go off of it experience prolong or any bleeding at all? I really am at loss, and feel that I'm not getting the proper treatment needed to satisfy me. I really would appreciate your impute and recommendations. Thank You, Karen Bullock
